Each year, UEHS honors the Italian tradition of La Befana! Italian teachers Amalia Roma-Circensi and Celia Randesi-Temple brought this legend to life as La Befana, a witch-like old woman who delivers gifts to children on Epiphany Eve, January 5.
This year, La Befana and Italian Club officers performed The Legend of La Befana for K-2 students at AGM, CFJ, GFJ, and TJW. Over winter break, the seven officers, Faith Castoro, Giada Circensi, Maria De Nardis, Lukas Diamantakos, Lucia Foti, Allison Mariano, and Isabella Minna prepared the script, costumes, and props. Ms. Randesi-Temple played the young La Befana and Ms. Roma-Cirsensi played the older La Bafana. Three kings and four narrators rounded out the cast.
On January 6, the group performed the skit in Italian and English, sharing this beloved tradition with younger students. Each class received candy, a flyer, and a coloring activity to take home. Thank you to Sam’s Club in Vestal for the generous candy donation.
Grazie to everyone who made this cultural experience unforgettable!
