Lunar new year

Lunar New Year is a school holiday in New York State and will be observed on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. There is no school for all students on that date.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation designating the Lunar New Year as a school holiday in September 2023. This date just so happened to be a Saturday in 2024. This year's Lunar New Year falls on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, and New York State schools will not be in session.

This year will be the Year of the Snake. The Year of the Horse will be ushered in on February 17, 2026, next year’s Lunar New Year

In Asian culture, the Lunar New Year marks a 15-day Spring Festival, which is the most important and widely celebrated festival in China. Families traditionally give their children money in red envelopes, which symbolize luck and prosperity. At its core, the Lunar New Year is a celebration of homecoming and family reunion.
