Last Friday, UEHS hosted Pizza With the Pups in the Diversity Café during lunch periods, offering students a meaningful opportunity to connect with Animal Care Sanctuary (ACS) and learn about the power of second chances.
Students heard from ACS representatives about the challenges shelter dogs face and the importance of empathy in giving them a new lease on life. A highlight of the event was meeting Stafford, a big, friendly dog who has been waiting for his forever home at ACS for 93 days.
As part of this humane education initiative, students assembled Canine Survival Kits to donate to ACS and the U-E Family Center. These kits—complete with kibble, treats, a slip lead, water, and a clean-up bag—are perfect for pet outings or emergencies.
At the heart of the ACS/UEHS partnership is storytelling, a powerful tool for fostering understanding and compassion. One poignant moment from last spring involved a student’s memoir inspired by meeting Tucker, a shelter dog. The student, who is adopted, wrote,
"What these dogs want is just to be loved, to be seen. To be chosen, because that’s what adoption is—having someone love you enough to choose you. That’s what we all want. To be chosen. To be accepted."
Events like Pizza With the Pups not only bring joy but also instill lifelong lessons about empathy, kindness, and connection.
