On January 24, CFJ first graders in Rebecca Tiberi's class started their "Hearts Around the World" project.
The goal was to get a Valentine's card from each of the fifty states and as many different countries as possible.
As part of their geography lessons, students use a map of the United States and of the World. Then, incorporating organization skills, as a card is received, students keep track of where it is from.
Each day the class is excited to open the mail and has been overwhelmed with the response. As of today, Valentine’s Day, they received valentines from Florida, Alaska, North Carolina, Montana, Rhode Island, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, and Hawaii, just to name a few. They received cards from England, Switzerland, Germany, and Spain. They used Google Translate to read these cards, which incorporated language skills. To top it off they received a package from Australia that included a stuffed koala bear!
This project incorporated learning skills in geography, writing, organization, and world languages, But the most valuable lesson is kindness and love that can be spread around the world!
