In Margo Kibbler’s JFS Afterschool Winter Enrichment class, Puppy Love, students have been engaging in the exploration of canines. For six weeks, they are not only learning about dog behaviors but also actively contributing to the well-being of dogs in the community.
The creative initiatives, such as upcycling tennis balls and using old soccer socks to make toys, showcase the students' commitment to providing enrichment for dogs. Crafting octopus toys, pull toys, sniff mats, and even making homemade dog treats reflect their dedication to benefiting both shelter dogs and those visiting the classroom.
The opportunity for students to connect with therapy dogs, including JFS therapy dog Koia and other U-E therapy dogs, is an added benefit as the presence of these dogs, especially those from their former elementary school, enhances the overall experience for the students.
Moreover, the class delves into the concept that dogs can have jobs, too. The visit from New York State Police Trooper Adam Vargeson and his K9 partner Rowe was an exciting highlight. Officer Vargeson shared insights into his career, the journey into the K9 Unit, and the important role they play in ensuring community safety.
This enrichment opportunity not only educates students about canine behaviors but also instills a sense of responsibility and compassion as students actively participate in helping local dog shelters.
