April 11 – Full Day at School
The day began with students attending classes alongside their Italian peers, getting a feel for the school day in Varese. While they were in class, Mrs. De Michele and Mrs. Roma-Cirsenis visited a local elementary school, where they served as guest speakers for third and fifth graders. The younger students were enthusiastic and curious, asking questions about life in the U.S., Endicott, food, and sports. The teachers also helped the kids practice for their English-speaking exams.
Some of the U-E students joined a P.E. class and played volleyball with their Italian classmates. In the afternoon, the group enjoyed gelato and took a stroll through downtown Varese, with a little bit of shopping on the side.
April 12 – Day Trip to Venice
The group started the day early, boarding a private bus to Milano Centrale, one of Italy’s grand train stations. After a quick breakfast at the station’s café, they boarded the Italo high-speed train for Venice. The journey took about two and a half hours, with students chatting, napping, and playing cards during the ride.
Upon arrival at Venice Santa Lucia station, the group was greeted by sunny, breezy weather and temperatures in the 60s. A local guide led a tour through the city, highlighting the history of Venice and the Basilica of San Marco. They also walked through the fish and vegetable markets before breaking for lunch. The rest of the afternoon was free for students to explore, take photos, shop, and enjoy gelato in one of the world’s most iconic cities.
At 5 p.m., a private boat took them back to the train station, offering beautiful views of Venice from the water. After grabbing snacks and coffee, they boarded the train to Milan, followed by a bus ride back to school, where their host families picked them up. Tired but happy, everyone agreed: Venice was unforgettable.
April 13 – A Rainy Sunday in Varese
Palm Sunday arrived with rain and cool temperatures in the high 50s. Professors Grigioni, De Michele, and Roma-Cirsenis attended mass in the nearby town of Castiglione Olona, then had lunch and did some shopping in nearby Saronno.
That afternoon, the students enjoyed a BBQ hosted by one of the Italian families, giving everyone a chance to relax, socialize, and enjoy a home-cooked meal together.
