ARTICLE I
(Name and Purpose)

Section 1. The name of this organization shall be the National Honor Society.

Section 2. The purposes of this organization are to recognize and encourage academic achievement, while also developing other characteristics, such as character, service, and leadership, which are essential to citizenship in a democracy.  Through the National Honor Society chapter service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection. Membership is thus both an honor and a commitment.

ARTICLE II
(Membership)

Section 1. Membership in this organization is by invitation only.  Juniors who have a minimum cumulative (non-rounded) 90% UGPA average at the end of the second marking period (verified by the high school Records clerk) will be invited to apply for membership.  Seniors who are not in NHS and who also have a minimum 90% UGPA average will also be invited to apply.

Applicants must be verified by reliable sources (not their parents) that they have demonstrated leadership, good character, and community service.  Forms will be distributed to the applicant's teachers and a meeting will be convened to consist of 5 teachers plus the NHS advisor.  Selection will be based on the demonstration of leadership, community service, and good character.

ARTICLE III
(Officers)

Section 1. The officers in this organization shall be President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer

Section 2. Elections will be held at the beginning of the school year.  Any member may apply for office by writing a letter of qualifications and indicating which position. The entire membership will vote.

ARTICLE IV
(Supervision)

Section 1.  The activities of this organization shall be subject to the approval of the principal and/or the NHS Advisor. 

ARTICLE V
(Meetings)

Section 1. The regular meetings will be on the first and third Fridays of every month in the Large Lecture Hall.

Section 2. All meetings shall be open meetings under the supervision of the NHS Advisor.

ARTICLE VI
(Probation and Dismissal) 

Section 1. Members are expected to participate in peer tutoring and complete at least two individual service projects during their Senior year. The documentation of these tasks will be kept on file with the advisor.  Failure to comply may result in probationary status.

Section 2. Members' grades will be monitored by the Advisor. If a member's grades drop below 90% for two consecutive marking periods, the member will be on probationary status until grades improve.  All UEHS principals will have a list of the NHS members.

If a situation occurs in which a member commits any infractions of good character or violates any civil laws -- they will be subject to review by the UE Honor Society Board and UEHS Administration.  This could lead to dismissal.  Members on probation will not be allowed to wear the NHS drape at graduation. 

NHS Dismissal Policy

1. Any National Honor Society member who falls below the standards that were the basis for their selection, shall be promptly warned in writing by the NHS Advisor and be given a reasonable amount of time to correct the deficiency; except in the case of flagrant violation of school rules or the law, the member does not necessarily have to be warned.

2. A reasonable number of warnings means 2 written warnings, except in the case of flagrant violation of school rules or the law whereby there will be no written warnings prior to dismissal.

3. In all cases of impending dismissal, a member shall have a right to a hearing before the Faculty Council.  For purposes of dismissal, a majority vote of the Faculty Council is required. 

4. A member who has been dismissed may appeal the decision under the same rules for disciplinary appeals in the school district.

5. The National Council and NASSP shall hear no appeals in dismissal cases.
