An important aspect of preparing our students for careers is providing them with leadership skills. To that end, a group of UEHS students recently participated in a workshop on inclusive youth leadership.

The two-hour workshop, led by Nicole Fess from Special Olympics, included engaging activities that identified their strengths and weaknesses as leaders. They learned about ways to help make the high school more inclusive. They brainstormed ideas and created committees to promote inclusivity.

Inclusive youth leadership is when young people of all abilities are given opportunities to be leaders in their schools and communities. These workshops help students find their voices and teach them to become change agents by promoting equity and acceptance. Social inclusion is best fostered when activities within the classroom, school, and community are designed and implemented by a diverse group of students within a school.

As student leaders emerge through these work sessions it will greatly enhance efforts to create and sustain change within the school and the community.
