The district celebrates PTA Founders' Day on Thursday, February 27. This event is run by devoted individuals in our schools' PTAs and PTSAs, where honorees are celebrated for their dedication to children.
A bit of history: The PTA was founded in 1897 by Alice McClellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst, who believed mothers would support their mission to eliminate threats that endangered children. In a testament to their vision, more than 2,000 people attended the first convocation of the National Congress of Mothers in Washington D.C. In 1970, the National Congress of Parents and Teachers (National PTA) and the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers (NCCPT), founded by Selena Sloan Butler, merged to serve all children. The National PTA is the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the nation and has established many programs to improve the lives of children.
Locally, our PTAs and PTSAs serve the children and families in our school district, promoting
opportunities children might otherwise not be able to experience. On Thursday the 27th, we will learn more about this year's honorees and the many ways in which they have made a positive impact on the lives of others at Union-Endicott.
Congratulations to this year's honorees, who include parents, teachers, staff members, administrators, and volunteers whose efforts have enriched the lives of our students.
