The gym at JFS was filled with drums, singing, and dancing as the Binghamton University African drumming and dancing group NUKPORFE visited seventh-grade general music students for a special performance.
Students in Mary Maria Aimoniotis’ music classes have been learning about the origins of hip-hop and rap. Ms. Aimoniotis wanted to bring the music to life so she invited the group to the school.
Dressed in traditional costumes, the BU group performed a number of songs and dances, encouraging students to sing along with them. Students learned that the roots of the music they love are tied to this type of music and even got a chance to learn some new dance moves.
The excitement and enthusiasm from both groups were quite amazing! Everyone had a wonderful time! Click here link to view the Showcase Classroom TV video.
