At TJW, third graders participated in a "Restorative Practices Switch Up Day," an intentional event designed to strengthen relationships, address conflicts, and foster a positive classroom culture. Organized by restorative coaches Kelsey Klein and Alexis Thomas, the day focused on community-building exercises, group discussions, and practical problem-solving.
The event began with an overview of how the activities would be facilitated. Students then rotated through four engaging stations:
🔵 Academic Circle: A multiplication review game encouraged teamwork while reinforcing math skills.
🔵 SEL Circle: Students explored Zaretta Hammond’s Cultural Tree, answering thoughtful questions in concentric circles to deepen their understanding of identity and connection.
🔵 Circle Games: Fun and interactive activities like Cold Wind Blows (getting to know each other), Going on a Picnic (memory skills), and Beat the Clock (basketball and teamwork) promoted collaboration and laughter.
🔵 Conflict Resolution Circle: Students tackled lunchtime challenges by discussing likes, dislikes, and potential solutions. Their agreements are now proudly displayed outside the cafeteria as a reminder of their collaborative efforts.
This meaningful day demonstrated the power of restorative practices in creating a stronger, more connected school community.
