When you think of vending machines, snacks, and drinks likely come to mind—but at CFJ Elementary, there’s a new twist. Standing proudly in the school’s main lobby is a Book Vending Machine, a creative way to promote reading and reward student achievement.
This innovative addition was made possible by the Endicott Lions Club, who approached the school last year with the idea. After months of planning, led by school librarian Becky Gay, the machine was unveiled during a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. David Hubman of the Lions Club spoke about the importance of fostering a love of reading, and he, along with a group of students, had the honor of making the first book selection.
The vending machine is integrated into CFJ’s Character Education program. Students earn gold coins by demonstrating strong character, maintaining good attendance, or achieving academic milestones. Each gold coin allows them to "purchase" a book to keep, turning good behavior and effort into an opportunity to build their personal library.
A heartfelt thank-you goes out to the Endicott Lions Club for their generous donation and partnership with CFJ. This unique project not only encourages literacy but also celebrates the achievements of students in a meaningful way. What a wonderful way to make learning fun!
