Tiger Ventures recently took hands-on learning to a new level by constructing a unique sustainability classroom—a 26-foot diameter, three-frequency geodesic dome. This innovative project was the result of collaboration between Tom Palazzo's 8th grade Tiger Ventures tech class and UEHS technology students. In just one day, they transformed their vision into reality, creating an outdoor learning space where students will explore sustainable practices.
A Multi-Disciplinary Learning Experience: The geodesic dome is designed to serve as an outdoor classroom for studying horticulture, passive and active solar energy, and construction techniques. This ambitious project integrates multiple disciplines, including math, science, technology, and engineering, offering students a comprehensive educational experience.
From Concept to Completion: The dome project was carefully planned and designed by Palazzo’s Tiger Ventures Tech Classes during the previous school year. Students engaged in every step of the process—from pre-planning and taking measurements to designing and selecting materials. This meticulous preparation laid the groundwork for a successful build.
On the day of construction, high school tech students played a crucial role, acting as site supervisors and guiding the younger students through the assembly process. This collaboration not only provided practical experience in construction but also taught valuable lessons in teamwork and project management.
Real-World Skills in Action: This project offered students a rare opportunity to see a complex project through from conception to completion. It emphasized the importance of planning, problem-solving, and collaboration. The geodesic dome now stands as a testament to what can be achieved through innovative education and teamwork, providing a lasting resource for sustainability education at Tiger Ventures.
