white table

For over a decade, fourth- and fifth-graders at CFJ have been participating in a special tribute to honor our veterans.

Students gathered in the cafeteria with a white table set on the center of the stage. Local veterans are introduced and they briefly talk about their service in the military. Then the book, “America’s White Table” is read by teachers. While the book is read, the local veterans participate in placing special items on the white table.  After the book was read, students sang a song to the veterans. Then students asked some questions about their service. Throughout the day, students placed thank you cards and letters on the table, which were collected at the end of the day and sent to local veterans.

Teachers also discussed the book in class, the purpose of Veterans Day, and why it is observed as a holiday.

It is a very touching way to honor the men and women who have served our country.  Teacher Katy Haus said, “The students respond very well to the event and are extremely respectful of the table as it sits out all day. “
