New York State has passed Erin’s Law requiring the teaching of child sexual abuse and exploitation prevention to students in grades K-5. Therefore, parents/guardians are unable to opt out of this requirement. It was named for Erin Merryn, an abuse survivor who has advocated for such laws across the nation. The purpose is to provide age-appropriate curriculum to all students in grades K-5 to ensure students have the knowledge needed for personal safety and to provide a nurturing and caring environment open for disclosure of any incidents. Over the course of the next couple of months, students will receive age-appropriate lessons via discussions, activities and videos.  Trained district employees, such as school social workers, counselors, psychologists, and others will be providing lessons to students. The personal safety and wellbeing of our students is and will continue to be a top priority for our district.

In an effort to work collaboratively with families, the topics, lessons, and videos can be accessed with this link:   https://www.uek12.org/o/uecsd/page/erins-law  If you have questions, please contact your building principal.
